The Gatherati have given M11 a good threshing for the last few weeks, and the set has been picked clean of tech, sleepers, cards that are awake, and cards that woke up only to realize it’s Saturday and who the fuck designs a cell phone alarm that defaults to going off every day at the same time if you set it to go off once.

But that doesn’t mean I can’t do a set review. Nay, it means I can do the most legit set review of them all, because it focuses on what you get when you spend your dinero on this fine game — mountains (and islands, and forests, and plains, and oh somebody shoot me in the head) of delicious, inedible, flaky chaff. Welcome to GyantSpyder’s Nothin’-but-Chaff Set Review, M11 edition.

My ratings are all for the same format: Shoebox in the Back of Your Closet Constructed. I might add commentary for other formats I play or hear other people talk about, but if I don’t mention a card, it’s probably because it thinks it is better than other cards, and I’m not interested in jerkface, persnickety cards like that.

Besides, nobody wants to read an “all-wheat” set review by somebody with a 1650 online limited rating. That would be silly.

“Hey guys, <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Cultivate&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Cultivate') >Cultivate puts a land in your hand and one on the battlefield tapped: Seems good in a deck that needs a land on the battlefield tapped and one in my hand and that can pay 3 mana at some point, one of them green. In that deck, it will be a perfect fit, like a custom-tailored Oxford shirt. Combo it with <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Vengevine&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Vengevine') >Vengevine and Jace, which I hear some people have some of. Make a ramp deck, because why the hell not, every card that costs mana can go in a ramp deck — the whole point of a ramp deck is to pay mana for stuff. Control sure likes it too; I talked to him personally. We went bowling; true story. What are you doing behind my back with that piano wire?”

No, sir, reading that 500 times was enough for me — 501 would be overkill. Besides, they always say write what you know, and I know what it means to be worthless; I’ve ridden across town at 11:30 at night on the Baltimore Light Rail.

Same ratings as always, folks:

5.0 — Worthless, but this card is the real deal. Extends mankind’s notion of what it means to be worthless or otherwise occasions universal celebration. Examples: <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Chimney+Imp&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Chimney+Imp') >Chimney Imp, <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Sorrow%26%238217%3Bs+Path&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Sorrow++++s+Path') >Sorrow’s Path

4.5 — Worthless, but creates the fully-realized impression it might have value in another reality whilst remaining without it in our own Examples: <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Homarid&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Homarid') >Homarid, <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Dash+Hopes&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Dash+Hopes') >Dash Hopes

4.0 — Worthless, but a past, present or future sentimental favorite. Examples: <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Dwarven+Pony&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Dwarven+Pony') >Dwarven Pony, <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Noggle+Bandit&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Noggle+Bandit') >Noggle Bandit

3.5 — Worthless, but I’d be excited to play this in a raw-dog, basic-land four-color sort-of-good-stuff deck, even if it makes me lose (especially when it makes me lose). Examples: <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Banishing+Knack&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Banishing+Knack') >Banishing Knack, <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Salvage+Slasher&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Salvage+Slasher') >Salvage Slasher

3.0 — Worthless, solid chaff. Somebody who doesn’t quite know how to play Magic might be excited to be given this card by a small child. Examples: <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Joyous+Respite&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Joyous+Respite') >Joyous Respite, <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Kranioceros&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Kranioceros') >Kranioceros

2.5 — Worthless, disappointing chaff. If I saw a bunch of these jammed into a urinal in a public bathroom, I’d still pee on them, but I’d feel bad about it, because they were denied a chance to be more interesting chaff by a cruel and uncaring universe. Examples: <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Adarkar+Windform&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Adarkar+Windform') >Adarkar Windform, <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Restless+Bones&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Restless+Bones') >Restless Bones

2.0 — Worthless, boring chaff. This card is mundane or unimaginative or otherwise fails to trick me into a having a strong reaction to it, as opposed to other crappy cards that do. The opposite of love isn’t hate, it’s indifference. Examples: <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Spineless+Thug&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Spineless+Thug') >Spineless Thug, <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Dense+Canopy&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Dense+Canopy') >Dense Canopy

1.5 — Worthless and upsetting, even for stable, well-adjusted adults. Examples: <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Bog+Hoodlums&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Bog+Hoodlums') >Bog Hoodlums, <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Inner+Fire&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Inner+Fire') >Inner Fire

1.0 — Kicking and screaming constructed role-player. Examples: <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Cancel&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Cancel') >Cancel, <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Demonic+Dread&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Demonic+Dread') >Demonic Dread

WHITE

<a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Ajani%26%238217%3Bs+Mantra&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Ajani++++s+Mantra') >Ajani’s Mantra

We all know the lifegain trick — new or inexperienced players like it, but as you get better at the game, you learn it is an arithmetic solution to a geometric problem. So lifegain cards get forgiven for sucking, to an extent. Sucky lifegain cards come in two flavors — sucky one-shot lifegain, and sucky long-term investments.

Still, even on its own terms, <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Ajani%26%238217%3Bs+Mantra&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Ajani++++s+Mantra') >Ajani’s Mantra is dull. If I’m going to make a bad long-term investment, it better promise me some awesome returns before failing to deliver. After all, my whole game plan revolves around the game going forever and nothing happening. In the unlikely event that it turns out that way, <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Heroes+Remembered&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Heroes+Remembered') >Heroes Remembered or <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Honden+of+Seeing+Winds&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Honden+of+Seeing+Winds') >Honden of Seeing Winds promise me lifegain well into the double digits. Ajani’s Mantra promises me maybe a <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Nourish&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Nourish') >Nourish, and it can be completely shut down by a turn 10 <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Jhessian+Infiltrator&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Jhessian+Infiltrator') >Jhessian Infiltrator.

Plus, this card’s flavor doesn’t sound magical at all, and its art is mundane. It’s something Ajani said at some point and presumably says a lot that has a marginal effect on stuff, plus a cloud that looks like a cat, which I see all the time. Nobody would want a card called “GyantSpyder’s Advice for Buying Steak Sauce and Hey That Street Sign Kind of Makes it Look Like that Guy is Humping that Deer.” The font would be too small.

RATING — 2.0

<a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Ajani%26%238217%3Bs+Pridemate&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Ajani++++s+Pridemate') >Ajani’s Pridemate

This is one of the flagship chaff cards in the set. Look at this card, and you immediately know M11 has a shitty lifegain theme. This card will, in turn, slide effortlessly into any lazily built lifegain deck. Even if there weren’t more than the usual number of lifegain related cards in M11 (which there very well might not be, I’m not going to count them), this card alone gives context to a whole bunch of other chaff in the set. That’s called “getting value.”

It’s also a card that begs you to build a half-assed deck around it that offers rapidly diminishing returns the more time you spend on it, and that’s something I love my chaff cards to do (take <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Blademane+Baku&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Blademane+Baku') >Blademane Baku, for example).

There are a few things holding this card back, however. For one, I am confused as to whether “mate” means Ajani has sex with these lion dudes. For another, why are there two of them when the title of the card is singular (is that Ajani in the background there?). For a third, why is the lion dude in the front clearly a tiger?

RATING — 3.5

<a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Angelic+Arbiter&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Angelic+Arbiter') >Angelic Arbiter

I’m probably going to skip a lot of the crap rares in the set, because they’re not quite as worthless as the great many crap commons and uncommons, but I figured I at least had to address the first white one in alphabetical order so I had a place to put this paragraph.

Angelic Arbiter (or, as I call it, “Arbitrary Angel”) is a thick hock of flying fat with a complicated ability that may or may not do anything. One thing is certain — Arbitrary Angel is going to get a lot of people upset because they forgot to do the thing they wanted to do before they did the thing they didn’t care whether they did or not. It also wins the M11 award for “Most Likely to Stop Working Correctly on MODO Every Time a New Set Comes Out.” Somebody call a digital plaque engraver.

Whether or not the Arbitrary Angel’s abilities generate an advantage for the person who sinks a million mana into it depends on whether that person’s opponent makes decisions about what to do on his or her turn by some mechanism other than random chance. Since no other such mechanism has yet been discovered among Magic the Gathering players, the angel is about as likely to stop somebody from making a mistake than it is to keep him or her from doing something constructive.

How this is all communicated by lens flare, giant wings and a whole lot of butt-tentacles is anybody’s guess.

RATING — 2.5

<a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Armored+Ascension&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Armored+Ascension') >Armored Ascension

This is a reprint of a fine card that plays well in casual decks. I like having it in the core set more than having <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Blanchwood+Armor&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Blanchwood+Armor') >Blanchwood Armor, because Blanchwood Armor is just good enough to keep letting me down, whereas, thanks to costing an extra mana, Armored Ascension is not quite good enough to get my hopes up, despite its <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=levitation&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=levitation') >levitational flavor.

However, Armored Ascension is starting to slip — the art that has been rerun twice now doesn’t show the spell combining the concepts of armoring and ascending nearly as hilariously as Frodo McShieldwings did.

Fun fact: Despite caring more about Plains than any card in Standard short of <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Landbind+Ritual&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Landbind+Ritual') >Landbind Ritual, no version of Armored Ascension has ever shown a Plains on it. You’re welcome.

RATING — 3.0

<a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Assault+Griffin&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Assault+Griffin') >Assault Griffin

Sometimes you find one of those little round pads about the size of a dime in your apartment, and you leave it on your dresser for a couple of months. Then, one day when you’re bored, you pick up the little pad between your thumb and index finger and wonder whether there’s something in your room that is sitting on top of something else and running the risk of scratching that thing, because it is missing one of its little round pads.

So, you go around to all of your things that are on top of other things and look, and some of them are missing a pad and some of them aren’t. The DVD player is always missing one, for example. But you’re not sure which thing this one is from, and you don’t really want to put hot glue anywhere near your DVD player, so you put it back on your dresser for a few months in a little ceramic cup with a pen cap and a few buttons that correspond to as-yet undiscovered now-unwearable shirts.

This is what Wizards is doing with <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Snapping+Drake&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Snapping+Drake') >Snapping Drake.

RATING — 2.0

<a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Blinding+Mage&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Blinding+Mage') >Blinding Mage

White’s power of blinding things seems poorly articulated. For one mana and tapping, Blinding Mage can blind one dude, For 8 mana and not tapping, <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Dawnglare+Invoker&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Dawnglare+Invoker') >Dawnglare Invoker can blind all the dudes an opponent controls. Given that both these cards use localized, unfocused light sources, they should not have such disparate effects. Looking into the sun doesn’t blind me less if there are a thousand other people also doing it.

<a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Blinding+Beam&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Blinding+Beam') >Blinding Beam is the way to do blinding cards right — give them a reason to blind something specific. The beam-like quality of the blinding also makes it conceivable that they work on things like <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Wall+of+Frost&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Wall+of+Frost') >Wall of Frost, which, while not affected by blinding, might very well be affected by beams.

Fun fact: There are four creatures in Magic that are already blind, but they can all be blinded again by blinding mage. You’re welcome.

By the way, does anybody actually play tappers for fun? I mean, they work great in limited, but I don’t think I’ve seen very many casual decks sporting <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Master+Decoy&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Master+Decoy') >Master Decoy. People seem more likely to just forego removal altogether than to have their creature removal die to creature removal. This makes Blinding Mage a bit less exciting than it might otherwise be in the ol’ shoebox.

RATING — 2.5

<a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Cloud+Crusader&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Cloud+Crusader') >Cloud Crusader

This is one of many Magic cards with art that could also appear on a heavy metal album cover, and that’s a fine thing. It seems as if waving around that big sword would be difficult to do with one hand regardless, but would be especially difficult to do with the griffin’s huge wings in the way and his own billowing cape to deal with. It seems likely he’d either get his sword caught in his clothes and plummet to his death, or cut off his own griffin’s wing and plummet to his death (that is, if green doesn’t just straight-up plummet him to his death).

It’s surprising that different artists did the art for Cloud Crusader and Arbitrary Angel — each is made impressive by the big wings and a blazing skyscape and unimpressive having a face and torso too small to be discernable. (Oh, and Arbitrary Angel would appear on more of a corporate rock album from the late 70s, like an early Journey album or something from STYX. It’s just a little too “white” for Earth, Wind and Fire.).

All that said, Cloud Crusader is a meh piece of chaff. It’s functional in limited, but once it’s in the shoebox, I can’t see any reason to pull it out. Somebody turning to the chaff isn’t going to be looking for power level — if she wanted to play good cards, she’d play good cards. It doesn’t matter very much whether this is better than Mothrider Samurai or not.

If I have 50 Time Ebbs in a box, that’s kind of cool, it’s like I have a giant Time Ebb. Fifty Excommunicates don’t aggregate in a fun way. Excommunicating a whole lot of people isn’t a fun or fantastical thing to do.

Back in the mid-90s, my mom was threatened with excommunication by some random Midwestern douchebag Bishop for subscribing to a left-of-center Catholic newspaper. He just sort of up and said that anybody subscribing to this newsletter should be excommunicated. That informs why I think this card is lame — excommunicating one person is a sort of severe thing to do, but the more people you excommunicate, the weaker it makes you and the more it makes you look like a dillweed.

And besides, it’s not like it has actual consequences. All it means is a bunch of very specific people aren’t allowed to talk to you, and, when the rubber meets the road, most of those people will still talk to you anyway. If you think it actually has power over heaven and Hell and stuff like that, you missed the part where the guy wanted to do it to housewives who read a Catholic newspaper.

So, it makes sense that you might want to run one <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Excommunicate&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Excommunicate') >Excommunicate in your draft deck to get an attack through, but I can’t imagine plugging four of them into decks to play for fun. It’s a dull, dry concept, and the card doesn’t actualize it very well, what with the smear in the middle and all the people around it yelling “HOOOOOLY CRAAAAAAAP!!!”

Goldenglow Moth can gain me four turns worth of Ajani’s Mantra every time it blocks! If I can pump its toughness every turn and convince my opponent to attack into it with small creatures for five turns while doing nothing else important, that’s 20 life! That’s chaff-tastic!

Holy strength has always been the lamer strength. Holy Strength has been so thoroughly humiliated by Unholy Strength that <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Holy+Armor&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Holy+Armor') >Holy Armor looks superior, just because there isn’t an Unholy Armor running around kicking sand in its face.

It’s not like +1/+2 itself is bad for chaff. <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Indomitable+Will&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Indomitable+Will') >Indomitable Will was awesome — one of my favorite chaff cards of Kamigawa, the block with a “chaff matters” theme. <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Armor+Thrull&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Armor+Thrull') >Armor Thrull is one of the best chaff cards of all time.

If you’re digging through chaff cards, you’re putting up with enough crap and don’t need to associate with punks.

Infantry Veteran deserves credit for one thing and one thing only. He has never fixed his seriously fucked up face. If dude can morph into rhino, dude can get a rhinoplasty.

Cards like this make me wonder why creatures engaged in combat with wizards and mythical beasts can be magically enhanced by anger. This card succeeds in every way that <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Inspired+Charge&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Inspired+Charge') >Inspired Charge fails, and by that I mean it has a flying elephant. When you’ve laid down the basic structure of an art object, it’s not enough to just leave it there — you need to populate it. Not every space in that structure is begging to be filled with something specific, but that doesn’t mean you just leave the inessential chambers empty. That’s where you put something, anything.

A flying elephant is as good a thing as any — I certainly prefer the sincerity and sense of fun in this card to something rote and tedious like <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Angelic+Blessing&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Angelic+Blessing') >Angelic Blessing or <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Elspeth%2C+Knight+Errant&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Elspeth+Knight+Errant') >Elspeth, Knight Errant’s second +1 ability.

Palace Guard should have spoiler tags on it, because it comes out and says something about Magic that it sometimes takes people years – or never – to figure out, and in doing so, ruins a fair amount of exploration.

“Go ahead. Block any number of creatures.”

“No, I mean the rest of my rules text. Read it to me.”

“Palace guard can block any number of creatures.”

“Then what?”

“What do you mean then? Then nothing. That’s all that happens. We can block as much as we want, and it never does anything. Oh my God it never does anything. You never do anything. You never win. We never win. You can block any number of creatures, a million creatures, and none of it matters. You still lose. We still lose. I am terrible at Magic.”

“Welcome to the desert of the real.”

Palace Guard is depressing. It has an ability that was impressive only when it was used very very sparingly or not at all. Blocking as much as you want is a lot less impressive when you slap it on a <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Horned+Turtle&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Horned+Turtle') >Horned Turtle that still sucks. <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Valor+Made+Real&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Valor+Made+Real') >Valor Made Real does a great job of creating the whiff of specialness out of nothing, but that whiff was farted out of the room by <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Palace+Guard&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Palace+Guard') >Palace Guard which makes what they do a mundane part of a third-rate tribal deck.

Tom LaPille creamed himself over inventing Siege Mastodon back when M10 came out, and when he did, I was on board. Siege Mastodon was one of the flagship cards of M10 in the same way that <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Mighty+Leap&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Mighty+Leap') >Mighty Leap is one of the flagship cards of M11 – it’s a common we haven’t seen before that has new enough, simple enough mechanics and flavor that it sets a tone for the set, and it also involves an elephant.

Siege Mastodon’s relative value has gone down significantly in M11. It isn’t new anymore, white seems to be all about flying now and not about big-butted groundpounders. The soldier theme was a defining characteristic of M10, and while nobody has really mentioned this that I’ve seen, it’s straight up gone – no swordsmiths, armorsmiths, first-striking rhinos (M11 is a bad set for rhinos in general), all gone.

Without a white dedicated to slogging it out in the trenches, Siege Mastodon is relegated to standing around watching other things fly – an important role, but neither a fun nor exciting one – and part of what makes Mighty Leap so fun and funny.

Sadly for <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Siege+Mastodon&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Siege+Mastodon') >Siege Mastodon, the joke’s on him this time.

“When the children cry,” it is because it turns out their fancy new Magic card has been born into a world already designed to make it irrelevant.

“Wait” before you dismiss the card out of hand, though, because it is a lion, which is a cool animal, and if you’re going to have to make a worthless card that is out of flavor for what the rest of its color is doing in a set and has no fantasy resonance, you might as well make it a cool animal.

This card “was big in the 80s before slipping into irrelevance and then dissolution in the early 90s and subsequently reforming as a glorified novelty act hearkening back to a time that never quite existed.”

You know puns and references are dominating card reviews “when the children cry.”

Sometimes you really want a chicken sandwich, but you’re not sure what kind of chicken sandwich you want. It really doesn’t matter, so you go up to the counter at the sub shop, and you order a chicken cutlet sandwich with lettuce, tomato and pickles. And then they give you a chicken parm sandwich. You eat it and you just as easily could have chosen the chicken parm. It’s not like you wanted it less. But it pisses you off a little or disappoints you that nobody listened.

Then you begin to doubt yourself. Maybe a chicken cutlet sandwich with lettuce, tomato and pickles would have been awful. Should you have said something other than cutlet? Maybe it’s your fault, and they did you a favor by giving you the chicken parm sandwich. It was okay, right? I mean, you like chicken parm. You should have eaten something healthier regardless. And no, chicken cutlet isn’t healthier, it’s still fried, and if they’d asked, you would have let them put cheese on it.

Now we come to the card that looks like it was painted on the interior vault of an Italian cathedral, or on the packaging for an action figure that comes with a brush and a bottle of bubbles. I like the Clydesdale hooves on this duder – they make a fair amount of difference. He’s all, “I came here to prance, but I know how to party.”

In M10, Stormfront Pegasus was a confounding functional reprint. Was it really worth it to not just call the thing <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Mistral+Charger&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Mistral+Charger') >Mistral Charger? It sounds like the name was somebody’s pet project. In this case, though, I think it was justified.

Stormfront Pegasus was a must-kill-or-block-or-otherwise-answer threat in M10, and its extra-resonant name was much more befitting of its tiny little sphere or badassitude. When white has a lot more fliers, it probably won’t stand out as much, but it still justifies itself.

<a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Stormfront+Pegasus&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Stormfront+Pegasus') >Stormfront Pegasus is proof that it isn’t enough for a card to have a name that can translate across block creative concepts – it should have a name that doesn’t suck when it translates across block creative concepts. Mistral Charger fulfilled the first, but not the second, so good riddance to bad horsies.

And it’s not like anybody was using their Mistral Chargers any less before than they are now that you can use 8 of them. 8-flying-pikers.dec just broke a vase. I mean legacy. I mean a vase when it fell off the shelf and knocked it over, because it’s 120 cards in a plastic box with a picture of Ang from Avatar on it. His name is Ang, right? <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Tireless+Missionaries&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Tireless+Missionaries') >Tireless Missionaries

It’s appropriate that they gave a card that is shittier than <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Venerable+Monk&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Venerable+Monk') >Venerable Monk a shittier name and concept than Venerable Monk. And Venerable Monk is itself a pretty shitty card for a whole bunch of reasons, related to being not fun at all and useless in any mildly competitive format, like Throw Me Against the Wall to See if I Bend Constructed (Venerable Monk is bad at that because of the emotional difficulty of throwing a blind Filipino man with sufficient force).

That symmetry the lone saving grace for Tireless Missionaries (well, that and that it has sort of a sex position in its name, by which I mean “ireless,” which is what sex is like sometimes if you ask nicely and wash the dishes first). I mean, I know a 2/3 that gains life at least has a purpose – it holds off aggressive decks full of 2/2s and gains back one and a half attacks full of life. But this is an advantage built into the card that operates at a totally different level than the card will when it is actually on the battlefield.

You can make a card that is ideally suited to attack through 1/1s, but no other creatures. But if it is only played in formats where the creatures people play are random, its purpose will be lost.

This card is there to bulk up the shitty lifegain theme and to be worse than a 3/3 for 5 would be, but the more I think about it, the more it disgusts me.

This card is just pretentious. It thinks it has a “role.” It thinks it “can do something.” I resent that it reaches so far above its station.

It’s Wind Drake, except they decided ahead of time they wanted to put this dude in as many sets that don’t matter as possible, so to pad that number, they put it in white sometimes for no reason – in three beginner sets that don’t matter, and then in 10th edition. Then they put it in M10 with Stormfront Pegasus, which makes it look like a doofus.

The least they could do is spell it with a y or something. Wyld Gryphon I would play. Maybe I’m just being narcissistic.

Even to a pig like me, it’s clear Zendikar is goin’ to slop. The oceans have leaped up and swallowed my old thickets, and monsters as big as the tallest trees — bigger, even — are all stompin’ around. They wave their hands and whole mountains get blasted. Little slimy baby monster guys are crawlin’ up all over. I hear one of these guys can’t be killed, not by nothin’. I hear one of ‘em is like a floating island travelin’ in time and you can’t even touch him. The more I size up these crazy aliens or whatever the hoozitz they are, the more I know the one I think this pig gotta say to each and every one of ‘em.

Get out of my way, bitches.

Y’all have had your fun, but this here is big-tusk Johnny, and y’all better recognize. I ain’t just passin’ through, I’m PASSIN’ THROUGH — and any you tubey-headed interlopers even TRY to get all up in my business whislt I’m getting all up in whatever business I’m choosin’ to get up in — and no, I will not tell you what it is, because it is my business — well, try that, and you’re gettin’ yourself a face full’a my FACE.

Let big-tusk Johnny tell you, you think you know annihilation? You don’t know annihilation. We’re talking tusks of above-average size — like BLADES, motherfucker, like BLADES — and I know that’s not something you can handle. So. Step. Back.

That’s right, the-pig man is comin’ through, and y’all better get clear — or levitate or scuttle or whatever you gray-faced sops do in whatever po-dunk hole you come from. No I don’t give half a whack. You don’t know me! Don’t talk to me like you know me!

You even look at me funny, you’re gonna find out why all your spawn got snouts and cloven hooves. You best bring me some room service to my <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Awakening+Zone&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Awakening+Zone') >Awakening Zone. Looks like Big Daddy Pig here’s gonna have a <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Growth+Spasm&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Growth+Spasm') >Growth Spasm.

Hey Emrakul, I porked your mom! And after I cast her, I took an extra turn!

You think I ain’t seen an 11/11 before or whatever the fuck? Elzdrazi, please. You punks were suckin’ your thumbs in your hedrons when I was pullin’ Lorthos out of Ula’s temple, taking his lunch mana, tentacle smacking his big blue face, making him tap himself in front of his buddies and letting him off with a warning. All you giant tentacle monsters are the same — back-tapping, down-low, legendary mulligan punks.

The only reason you’re even an inconvenience to me is because ripping on you gives me something to do between farts.

Now, get out of my way bitches. There’s a real pig coming through, and he’s bashing for three while you’re wetting your 8-mana underpants or whatever the fuck.

Oh, sorry there Mr. <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Magmaw&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Magmaw') >Magmaw, didn’t see you. Yeah, no, I’m fine. Just staying over here. Lovely weather we’re having. Yeah, you too. Thanks, I will. Much obliged.

According to reports, the mountain-sized floating tentacle monster then watched on helplessly as the pig mauled its master, one Kevin Wickles Planeswalker, age 11, of Oak Grove Rhode Island. Kevin was hospitalized with significant injuries to his face, which are expected to never fully heal.

Onlookers described the pig alternately as “kind of scary,” “enthusiastic,” “red,” “about this big or so,” “awfully silly looking,” and “between a 3.0 and a 3.5 in limited.” Passers-by indicated an unwillingness to deal with the pig, which has continued to romp unimpeded through Kazuul, Turntimber and a series of gated residential communities.

Without a guy walking next to me or some birds, it’s hard to tell sometimes, even when I’m all faded and in the distance. But I still ain’t blocking a pig with teeth.”

“And it makes the crazy eyes at you!” added the defender. “The Crazy Eyes!”

“Emrakul has shown some emotional imbalance in the past,” said notable Eldrazi psychologist Sarkhan the $70-an-Hour. “He seemed to take the scorn from that aether-lich pretty hard. He has shown an irrational fear of Zulaport or some of the black surrakar neighborhoods that I had previously attributed to racism. And he speaks mysteriously about dreams of being unable to stop something called ‘The <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Seeker&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Seeker') >Seeker.’

Emrakul’s opinion on the matter has been difficult to discern. So far, none of Zendikar’s hard-working multiethnic press corps has been able to get close enough to score an interview.

“The thing about this ‘pig with teeth’ phenomenon that astounds me the most,” said Theodore Silk, a PhD biologist at The Oran-Rief University, “Is that there is nothing unusual about this red pig. You see, laymen may not think this on a day-to-day basis, but all pigs have teeth. Tusks are just big teeth. All tusks are similar to blades in one way or another. And Emrakul has shown little hesitance annihilating as many as six fireboars at once.”

Added Silk, “And those pigs are on fire! All the time!”

“In this post-Eldrazi world, it makes sense for even the largest and most fearsome among us to treat even small threats seriously,” said Department of Homeland Security Secretary Havington Schnatz. “But Emrakul could never have terror target status.”

“I think he’s just intimidated,” said a local mindsculptor who spoke on the condition of anonymity. “You know what they say about pigs with big tusks. All those tentacles must be compensating for something.”

In an act that has excited citizens and civil authorities around the world, the G-20 and the United Nations have simultaneously voted on a mutually binding resolution to mill the world’s bombs. These bombs, rather than being dropped or mailed or windmill slammed, will be ground into a fine powder that will be used in high-school science labs, novelty moustache-drawing devices and nutritional supplements for impoverished, iron-deficient children in the developing world.

“This is a proud moment for all us,” said U.N. Secretary General That Korean Guy Whose Name Nobody Knows. “To see these bombs put in a place where they can’t hurt anyone anymore – you have to admit; that’s a pretty great feeling.”

The milling condition goes into effect in 2015, and, at the behest of the permanent members of the security council, does not effect bombs that have already been produced, bombs currently in production, or any bombs designed and manufactured before the ban takes effect.

“This is an empty piece of self-congratulation that doesn’t affect the board,” said Netherlands U.N. delegate Franz Blarsten. “Unless it is changed to mill all the weapons in the world – starting immediately, and completing within the year – it will not affect the ability of the nations of the world to make war, either against each other or against their own citizens.” During Blarsten’s remarks, the lights were turned out, and all the other delegates went for sandwiches.

Libyan Leader Mu’ammar Al-Qadhafi was slated to speak in the opposition, but he instead launched into a 94-minute rant about the shuffler.

That lovable scamp, Wizards of the Cost R&D puppy “Li’l Tapper,” is at it again! It was a rare sunny day in the Pacific Northwest, and Li’l Tapper was stuck sitting inside the Wizards offices — between the Pepsi machine and a giant fiberglass statue of Goblin Ski Patrol — with his widdle nose pressed against the window, just wanting to play.

So, when Card Designer Nenny Kagle made his way toward the fire doors, it was no surprise that Li’l Tapper bounded alongside him.

“No, Li’l Tapper!” said Nenny. “I can’t play now. I have to do something important.”

Nenny’s task, which he did not relish, was to briefly leave the heavily fortified Wizards compound, and, with all the strength of the mighty right arm of Wizards R&D, cast Onslaught Block, including the powerful and beloved fetchlands, out the door, far into the distance, and out of Extended.

“You’ve had a good run, Onslaught,” said Nenny, “but it’s about time we all see what the world is like without you for a little while.” He sobbed. “By which I mean still play faeries.” He sobbed again.

But as he cast open the door, blinded momentarily by tears and the rare encroachment of sunlight, he didn’t notice Li’l Tapper slip through his legs and out into the parking lot. Nor did he notice Li’l Tapper streak out after the cards he hurled into the distance, nor spot him scooting back in through the closing door as Nenny trudged up the stairs and back to his cube.

In fact, he didn’t notice anything at all until he saw the spoiler for the latest Magic: The Gathering set, Zendikar (which is Yiddish for “Please summon a limousine.”). Sure, enough, there were the fetchlands! They were a little torn up, not quite how they’d used to be, but there was no doubt about it — that pokey little puppy had managed to get yet another reprint into a Magic set!

“Oh, Li’l Tapper!!!” said Nenny. He didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Because that furry little ball of fun had managed to squeak out that door, the fetchlands were going to stay in Extended for another fifty dog years.

When asked how chewed-up scraps of paper left under a chair coated in slobber managed to get into a Magic set, Magical Developer Pom LaTille said:

“People think all we try to do is kill magic. This simply isn’t true, especially nowadays. We’ve worked very hard to improve our processes, tighten up our review standards, and do our best, especially in the most recent sets, to make Magic the most fun, varied experience it can be.

But I admit, it is nice every once in a while to get back to our roots. Sometimes I try to kill Magic with two hands at the same time, and I imagine myself diving sideways and hovering in the air with the camera zooming around me in wide circles, catching every tense moment of the action as I just click at random adding or deleting cards from a set.

We all pretty much think of it the same way. This one time, Tike Murian brought in a crate full of doves, and he kept them under his desk for a year, feeding them and caring for them, just so that he could release them and slide across his desk in slow motion the moment they shipped Tarmogoyf off to print. It was beautiful.

So, yeah, we pretty much do whatever we think the puppy wants. Who could say no to that face?”

Li’l Tapper is a black and white Border Collie — which means he is loyal, friendly, good with children, and fond of reprints, a trait he shares with the Nantuko Dachshunt, the Phyrexian Spaniel and the Poodle Aristocrat, which, despite having different breeds, turn out to be functionally identical.

Various Wizards employees have tried, halfheartedly at best, to say “No” to Li’l Tapper’s antics, with the unexpected result that Cancel has been scheduled for print in every Magic set through 2012.

Are you disappointed with your life? Wondering where things went wrong? Never getting what you want while everybody else you know has great jobs, perfect hair, nice houses, and beautiful families that love them? That’s what I was like before I got off my butt, decided to make something of myself, and recognized the power — and the elegant, natural majesty — of <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Great+Sable+Stag&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Great+Sable+Stag') >Great Sable Stag.

Now, I know what you’re asking. “Gregory,” you’re asking, “sure, Great Sable Stag has gracefully arched horns and firm, brown muscular flanks, and sure, it has a snow white belly as soft as the morning sunshine, but I have real problems. I have a mortgage. I have kids. I’m dyslexic. What can Great Sable Stag do for me?”

Let me tell you: Plenty. Going Stag™ can make the difference between being just another nobody who owes Blockbuster $15 and having the lifestyle you’ve always known you deserved, but never knew how to get, let alone sustain over any length of time without going into crippling debt.

(pictures of champagne, yachts, beautiful women, etc.)

First of all, and I love this, Great Sable Stag is a magical deer from the deep, primeval forests of fantasy. That’s something we can all use. Am I right?

‘Yeah!!’

Second, it’s resonant.

Third, it wrecks faeries. Totally and completely. Faeries isn’t in the room. Faeries just took up badminton and moved thousands of miles away to pursue it professionally. Faeries might as well have never been born. It’s one card that can beat an entire deck — and not just any deck, the best, most powerful, most unfair and unfun deck ever made, played by the worst human beings who ever existed!

‘Boooo!!!!’

That is literally months of worry that you won’t have to endure between now and the next rotation.

Tell me the truth, half of you would still run that if it cost twice as much!

(audience laughs, applauds)

But the really impressive thing is the way Great Sable Stag makes you FEEL. Am I right!?

(audience cheers!)

We’re not just talking confidence, we’re talking Great Sable Confidence. The confidence to run out there on turn three and start beating down with your soft nose and magically long tail. The confidence to start a small business, learn a new language, or finally take things to the next level with that cute babysitter with the lip piercing. Am I right, fellas?

(audience laughs)

But that’s only the beginning. Just listen to these testimonials:

“I haven’t been able to make love to my wife, despite years of therapy and drugs. But when I saw Great Sable Stag in my opening seven, I get excited. REALLY excited. Now I just make sure to draw it every twenty minutes or so, and it’s like I’m a teenager again!”
— Richard Franks, age 42

“When I know a man is packing a Great Sable Stag, it gets me all hot and bothered. His body just takes control. There’s no way I can counter it.”
— Mandy (name withheld), Age 22

“I like to hug Great Stable Stag when my dad comes home from drinking. It makes me think I also have protection from black and blue.”
— Tyler Hudson, age 9

<s>“Double block with Mutavaults.”</s>
— <s>XXXxxxxx</s>

At this point, you may be asking yourself, “Gregory has a good point, but how much does he expect me to pay for all this?”

Would you believe me if I said 3WUBRG?

2WUBRG?

BBRG?

BRRR?

BRGBRRWUUBRG?

Well, today, right now, you can start your journey to victory and self-love for the low low price of 1GG.

That’s right; for less than the cost of a Brooding Saurian, you can beat the best deck in the format, impress your friends, admire the shapely shoulders and thick, luxuriant fur of an untamed, wild, pure-spirited wild animal of the Wyld — AND find the self-esteem and courage to pursue your dreams, leaving your life of mediocrity in the graveyard.

BUT THAT’S NOT ALL!

Act now, and you get the full set of Great Sable Accessories:

You get the <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Oakenform&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Oakenform') >Oakenform

For just three easy payments of 4GG, WR, and U.

That’s a six-for-one! It doesn’t get sweeter than that!

But you’ll know how sweet it is — the first time you hold up the ineffable and incorruptible Great Sable Stag. I know I did, and my life has never been the same.

Go Stag™ with Great Sable Stag and never be effed or corrupted again.

Facing an overwhelming force intent on expansion, redrawing the map and its resettling and modernizing its traditional homelands, the Elder of the Sakura Tribe has declared an end to years of armed retreat and asymmetrical warfare by surrendering to Magic: The Gathering rules manager Mark Gottlieb.

The surrender took place on October 5, at Miren, the Moaning Well (now a national historic site), about 40 miles south of the Canadian border.

While the Sakura Tribe has responded to repeated attacks by giving up its traditional lands for years, it had long engaged in a practice of putting damage on the stack, wherein a rear guard would inflict a single point on the advancing army before committing ritual suicide. This practice made the tribe folk heroes among many Magic players, who, while they still settled into the seized lands, applauded the snakes’ courage, resourcefulness, and ability to keep counters off Umezawa’s Jitte.

“I always liked Steve,” said powerful wizard and Baylor College freshman Ankur Kartamian, using the common racial epithet for the tribe. “He was a good man, a common man. Sometimes he even got there, but mostly, he showed us to die as we lived, and to never make a choice between the two.”

“I am deeply saddened by his surrender,” added Kartamian’s roommate Mitchell Hart, as he tapped seven of the tribe’s ancestral mountains, plains and islands to cast a Bull Cerodon and have it enter the battlefield, “Some of us are getting together to protest this. We are considering a strongly worded e-mail, or maybe quitting Magic.” Hard then ordered Kartamian’s blockers and cast Unsummon before damage for a 2-for-1.

The Elder’s surrender was as eloquent as it was saddening:

“Tell Mark Gottlieb I know his heart. What he told me before, I have it in my heart. I am tired of fighting. Our chiefs are killed; Seshiro is dead, Shisato is dead. The Kamigawa Block is all dead. It is the Coatl who say yes or no. He who put damage on the stack is dead.

It is cold, and we have no blankets; the little Orhan Vipers are freezing to death. My people, some of them, have left the in-play-zone and run away to the removed-from-the-game-zone, and have no blankets, no food. No one knows where they are—perhaps freezing to death. I want to have time to look for my children, and see how many of them I can find, collect and trade with my friends. Maybe I shall find them among the dead.

Hear me, my chiefs! My mana neither floats nor burns; my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever.”

Claims that this speech was written by Wizards of the Coast poet laureate Doug Beyer, and not in fact by a playing card with a snake on it, remain unconfirmed.

Gottlieb responded to his longtime foe with a knowing respect, “It is true, many of the Elder’s children have left the battlefield and gone into exile. And I wish we had made this change earlier, before so many of the Sakura Tribe had to die. But this game has a bright future; a Manifest Destiny.

The Sakura tribe is part of that destiny. It is very hard to explain to our own children the lives that are lost in what is already a decided conflict. It is merely the march of history. To live together as one people, we must put an end to these senseless murder-suicides, as courageous as they may be.

Or else the whole country might collapse, replaced by a larger budget for Monopoly or other such bullshit.”

“You just watch,” said Sachi, daughter of Seshiro, a longtime advocate for a more violent, fireball-based Orochi policy. “This will change nothing. The Sakura Tribe will keep getting played and killed by the white man and giving him land until there is none left in its library. This amicable surrender is just a fog effect for genocide. The only choice our Elder has made is to die rather than fight.”

While the exiled Orochi were promised basic land, rumors are flying they have instead been forcibly relocated to the Dust Bowl.

“Whatever the damage this has caused, it has been assigned, and it is now too late to prevent it,” mourned Sachi.

HARRIS FAMILY DINING ROOM TABLE — In a bold, costly attempt to end instability and conflict brought on by the summoning spells of mighty wizards, Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund announced the nationalization of all dragons on Tuesday.

HARRIS FAMILY DINING ROOM TABLE — In a bold, costly attempt to end instability and conflict brought on by the summoning spells of mighty wizards, <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Karrthus%2C+Tyrant+of+Jund&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Karrthus+Tyrant+of+Jund') >Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund announced the nationalization of all dragons on Tuesday. The move puts a variety of key economic functions under the direct control of Karrthus, including Hunting, Harvesting Devastation, Igniting and Awakening, as well as the tides, most of the stars, and the Game-Trail department.

If successful, Lord Karrthus would come into play, assume sole control of all dragons, and untap them with state resources. The plan does not require the consent of the dragons, and, upon execution, would be permanent. Current dragonholders would be wiped out.

“We know this will take massive resources and has a low probability of success,” said Karrthus during a recent whistle-stop tour of five mountains, a scrubland and the <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=City+of+Brass&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=City+of+Brass') >City of Brass. “But these dragons represent an unacceptable systemic risk that only the government can properly untap and administer.”

When asked whether the Karrthus administration would put restrictions on the dragons to prevent them from continued ravaging, Jund Press Secretary <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Flameblast+Dragon&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Flameblast+Dragon') >Flameblast Dragon said, “All dragons are on the table at this point.”

It is by far the most expensive and broad dragon nationalization on record, although Karrthus has been quick to point out that dragon seizures are fairly common during periods of interplanar conflict. Previous plans, however, tended to take place at half the cost, in one color, with broad legislative support, and with counter backup.

Even in those cases, the plans were unpopular, and this one is not without its detractors.

A coalition against the nationalization, led by former Nicol Bolas minion <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Malfegor&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Malfegor') >Malfegor, has mobilized in protest. In support of the effort Malfegor is, through a third-party vendor, selling limited-edition posters of Lord Kathara teabagging him.

“We’re not sure he knows what he means,” said one zombie on the condition of anonymity, “but we’re willing to humor him if puts that uppity Jundie in his place.”

A press release from Malfegor’s staff office read, “This is more tap-and-spend from a government that has run out of ideas. We’ve all heard of big plans like this before, but how many of those plans ever resolved? All our swamps are still tapped from the <a href="http://goodgamery.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-mtg-helper/mtg_helper_cardfinder.php?find=Debtors%26%238217%3B+Knell&width=200&height=285" class="jTip" name="" onclick=window.open('http://magiccards.info/query.php?cardname=Debtors++++Knell') >Debtors’ Knell he tried to play last turn, and we’re not seeing that anytime soon. A DRAGON WILL NOT BE RULED!”

When asked about Malfegor, Karrthus remarked, “Of course dragons can be ruled. That’s the basis for the entire dragon system of government. As Mr. Malfeagor knows all too well, there is always a greater power.”

“Also, you can do pretty much anything for seven mana.”

Karrthus confirmed that, barring counters, the action would be completed with haste.

Dearest Mother, I hope this letter reaches you. I have paid the messenger the last of my cigarettes and several other things I dare not mention, in the hopes that my words might find your eyes. I fear my own may never gaze into them again.

Dearest Mother,

I hope this letter reaches you. I have paid the messenger the last of my cigarettes and several other things I dare not mention, in the hopes that my words might find your eyes. I fear my own may never gaze into them again.

What you suspected is true, and I am deeply sorry for doubting you — this camp is little more than a slaughterhouse. They have cast us into a pit, they battled us against each other for their amusement, and they have made it known that only half of those who remain will make it out alive.

We are so young — each of us is only 15. We have done everything they asked of us. And I have seen them, one by one or in clusters, all the others, gone, dead, drifting to the earth like cherry blossoms. They bring in fresh meat all the time, and they churn through it at a terrifying rate — I’ve seen hundreds, thousands of faces come and go — mauled and twisted, pressed into servitude, and, finally, cast aside.

A group of us had made a pact to hang together, to survive. The Evercore. We joked we would drink whiskey at the launch of 20th edition. Sixteen of us have made it this long, and we thought we were safe.

But they have made their intentions clear mother. Nothing is safe here. Not Scathe Zombies. Not Regeneration. Not even your face.

They shot Goblin King yesterday. They just dragged him — the King! — out in the street like a stray dog and put a bullet in the back of his head. They left him in the dirt with his crown over his broken nose to rot and be eaten by vermin. I’ve seen it many times, and I had even become used to it, but I feel a new dread. The dread I first felt when I saw Sedge Troll lying facedown in the mud. We had all joked about how he was invincible. When I saw him there, I thought, “This is my year — this is the year I go.”

Life has been hard since then, but there was a natural rhythm to it. I am beaten and broken (well, not broken. I was never broken. I have seen others here broken — they’d always vanish shortly after — but not me.) by the other prisoners on a daily basis. Every year I’m further outclassed and humiliated. Every two years, I’m reprinted anyway. You know I am tough. You know, no matter how bad things get, I attack for two.

The stories have helped, too. Telling all the little bears — so many bears, mother! — about when the King wore Gauntlets of Might, and he used to show us the calluses on his knuckles from it. He used to thump against the cinderblock wall of our cell and joke about playing the war drums, and I’d tell stories about Granite Gargoyle and Grey Ogre splitting up and crossing the Raging River, about the time we all climbed on the wall to dodge the Chaos Orb, or about the time Thicket Basilisk proved he was better than Cockatrice.

They’re just stories now, and when I go, they will be lost. Just like all the other bears that came before me. I guess I should be grateful. Most of those other bears didn’t get reprinted once.

I should feel glad of my long life, but I’m not. I wanted to be Evercore. I wanted these days, grim as they are, to last forever.

People tell me to trust in God, but even that seems hopeless. They’ve pulled him out of bed now, and they’re trying to shove him in a van.

You were always good to me. I am sorry I will never return to your hand again.

Love,

Grizzly Bears
